A Taste of Hawai'i
Hui! Time fo' Learn Pidgin!
What is Pidgin?
Hawaiian Pidgin is a dialect of American English. Born from the increase of immigrants from Japan, China, Puerto Rico, Korea, Portugal, Spain and the Philippines, the pidgin creole language was a necessity in the plantations. Hawaiian and immigrant laborers as well as the white overseers, found a way to communicate amongst themselves. Pidgin eventually made its way off the plantation and into the greater community, where it is still used to this day by many Hawaii-born locals.
***WARNING*** Learning these words/phrases does not give you a free pass to use your Pidgin vocabulary recklessly, especially in Hawai`i, in the presence of Hawai`i locals. You may offend someone if the language is not used correctly and I take no responsibility for a huge Polynesian aunty whooping your ass.
